I recently repaved my machine, and so had a fresh install of Firefox (1.5). Windows Media files would not play "inline" in the browser - I would just get the "missing plugin" icon.

Quick answer:
"about:plugins" shows the current FF plugins. You should have "Windows Media Player Plug-in" listed.
