Bluetooth Headset for Laptop

One of these days, I'll be setting up my wife with a Skype or Gizmo account, so she can talk to her good friend that just moved away. Her first complaint is that she doesn't want to be tied down to the computer while talking over VOIP.

I thought - I have a bluetooth headset that I'm not using with a cell phone, so can that be used for headphones / mic to the laptop?

Here is a decent place to start at Geekzone. This article talks about how to switch to Widcomm bluetooth drivers, since apparently the Windows XP SP2 drivers do not support the bluetooth audio stack?

Now that you have the Widcomm drivers, how to tell Windows to use the Bluetooth headset for audio / mic.

Gizmo - Alternative to Skype?

According to a small article in Wired - Gizmo is the next great VOIP client, and possibly better than Skype, due to the following:
  • up to 99 person conference (Skype max is 4)
  • uses standard session protocol, compatible with other clients like yahoo, iChat, etc. (Skype uses proprietary protocol)
  • uses central server farms, not P2P, so not subject to certain user's machines bogging down if busy doing other processing
  • record conversation directly to hard drive - great for podcasting

BadApple Plug-In for iTunes

My wife is always bummed that her mp3 player (Rio I think?) doesn't sync with iTunes. Although we've had bad luck with iTunes in general on my main desktop machine (fails to burn CD, laptop works fine), she still finds iTunes the best for buying music.

Anyway - here's a plug-in for iTunes to allow synching with any mp3 player (as long as it mounts as a USB hard drive). Small gotcha - can't sync DRM music that you purchased from iTunes, only MP3's that you ripped from your CDs or other source.

My Firefox Extension - Unwrap Text

I finally finished my Firefox extension (called Unwrap Text), and have it posted on the Mozilla dev addons site.

It was a bit of a struggle to get it approved; first the description wasn't detailed enough, then they denied me because my link to the updates.rdf file was at my volleynerd web site. Apparently you can only host updates.rdf on their server - no external links.

Now I'm having a bit of trouble making the "quick description" look good. I enter it with paragraph breaks, and it comes out correct on the pages of newest FF extensions. But when you get to the details page for the extension, the description text is all jammed together.

BTW - I entered bug #315996 at Bugzilla about the "newest extensions" link on their main page starting you at the 2nd page.

OK, so I'm "approved" at the mozdev.org site (UnwrapText project), but now have to learn CVS to put my source code up there. Found this page for noobs like me.

(update 11/26/05)
My college buddy Dave pointed me to TortoiseCVS for a decent Windows CVS client. Tried that a bit last night, and looks pretty decent. Coming from the Visual Source Safe (VSS) world, there are some different paradigms to transition to in the CVS world. Tortoise extends Windows Explorer with context menus and status icons, so there really is no GUI for it. Adding new directories is a little strange, and apparently per their CVS setup, you can't delete directories, just the contents within them (and those contents end up in the "attic").

Anyway - got my first label of code up there in CVS.

Here's a quick blog post with some links to converting video. Unfortunately it has a slant coming from Mac OS X
Boing Boing: Apple's new thing? Video iPod. But more crap-o copy-blocking.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)

Thanks to Engadget for a tutorial on how to get video from a DVD to iPod compatible video (on Windows). However, read the comments - the gurus are pointing out that the double re-encode is going to give crap output. I'm sure there are going to be many other paths through the video encoding maze... Maybe watch AVSFORUM.

Here's a HOW-TO from Engadget that shows how to convert video from Tivo to iPod. Although I have the superior ReplayTV :) instead of Tivo, once I have the MPEG2 on my PC (thanks to DVArchive), then I can follow along with this flow.

Another from Engadget - shows length of encoding, quality, etc.

TVHarmony has a product that will move vids from Tivo to iPod, PSP, AVI, MPEG. Haven't looked at it extensively, but can probably be adapted to work on MPEGs from my ReplayTV.

Here is another article from Engadget showing Videora iPod Converter (apparently a command line front-end for ffmpeg), all free tools. The Videora tool uses BitTorrent and RSS to grab shows as they become available.

Notepad2

While at PDC a couple weeks ago, I saw some demos where they were showing config files, source code, etc. with a text editor that *looked* like Notepad, but had syntax highlighting, etc. The title bar gave it away - "Notepad2".

A quick google search turns up Notepad2 here.

...and there are a bunch of blogs talking about it, with some interesting ideas on how to use it as a replacement to the standard Windows Notepad. (apparently the Windows OS will "repair" your system and put back the old Notepad if you just replace notepad.exe with a renamed notepad2.exe)

A couple links:
Fritz Onion

from a comment to Fritz's post:

Portable MP3 / Video Player

I haven't yet taken the iPod plunge. I've been thinking about it lately, but now am getting greedy and might get a player that supports video.

I don't think there are many options (rumors of a video iPod coming maybe before the end of the year), but here is one from Archos.

The Archos Gmini 402 here
And here is a review of it.
Now that the video iPod was announced, I'm looking at alternatives to see what I'd be missing. Apparently there's a full line of Archos video players. Bigger screen, windows media player compatible, etc.
Archos 420 is in buy.com add in Wired this week (11/29) for 349 (20GB)
Archos Mobile DVR AV 500 ($700) writeup - 100GB in Wired (can record from, and output to tv)

Another choice is the Dell Axim

PocketDish av700e looks sweet. But can't find much for pricing and availability.

The Creative Zen Portable Media Center looks good. My buddy Kral at MS said they can get a deal on this one.

Why is PC online gaming so troublesome?

My buddy Intern Joe and I tried to hookup tonight for an online Battlefield 2 session.

The title says it all - why is it so hard to find friends, find a server, connect, and get a game going in PC games? I had this same problem with Ghost Recon back when I tried that on the PC as well. With BF2, you can't even remember favorite servers, keep a friends list, etc. I remember it being a little better in the GameSpy software, so I'll have to try that next.

It's SO EASY with XBox:
  • push power button
  • play game
Intern summed up our sweet online session last night beautifully:

4:40 gt [Google Talk] call placed.
4:41 session begins
4:42 begin looking for room
4:48 still looking for room
4:49 realize need to patch game to most recent version
4:54 finished patching game. system freezes.
4:59 back in room
5:05 found room
5:07 in room.
5:09 cruising around map as gunner with v-nerd as driver.
5:13 lost, confused, no idea where the battle is. fire shots in the air.
5:15 must exit game, time to feed sara session ends. never saw an enemy soldier.
AWESOME game.

classic...

Update:
Two days later, intern and I figured, we've already been through all this ramp-up cost, so let's fire up a game, should only take a few minutes, right?

8:12 gt call placed
8:14 after quick "how-doin's", fire up BF2
8:16 begin looking for room
8:19 realize that Dan is on a different machine than before, and this machine is not patched
8:20 Dan starts download of patch
8:20 Intern starts in a game
8:24 Dan starts patch process
8:30 (long ass process - what the hell is this thing doing?) path process done
8:32 Dan back in lobby looking for intern
8:35 connect by IP to same game where intern is
8:38 finally in the game, trying to figure out where intern is
8:40 about to meet up with intern, game is over, MEC wins (38-0)

sweet! love this game...

Battlefield 2 Info

Getting involved (and crushed) in Battlefield 2 lately. Here's a decent community site with info, maps, forums, newbie guide, etc.

newbie guide

Total Battlefield 2

Server Remote Administrator

Video tips from CNET

Start game NOT in fullscreen mode. Allows to see chat, etc. behind, and minimize the game.
Basically, change the shortcut to have "+fullscreen 0" ... instead of "1"

Tweaks to make for optimal game performance. Tweak Guides

Stats

  • BF2Tracker
  • BF2S (mostly same data as bf2tracker, but with some "last played info")
  • another stats site (more up to date for now since the Special Forces exp pack is screwing with the feed for bf2tracker and bf2s)
  • BF2Stats.nsvr.info - one page of high level stats, and live sig

Mods

Multiplayer cooperative, 32 bots on a map sized for 64, additional control points, vehicles, many airports opened up

ahh - supposdely cooperative play is unsupported by EA games. However, a single player game can be joined by IP address. Will have to try this out on my LAN...

Yep, works. Just have to open some ports if your buddies are coming in from outside the firewall. from memory, verify these: 16567, 29999, 4711 (this last one is new as of patch 3)

The guys at Rising Conflicts are coming up with the uber mod. Not done yet (as of 12/20/05), but screenshots look great.

VOIP
Intern and I were in a game last night with a dude that was using the built-in VOIP. We usually just hookup over Google Talk, so we've been oblivious to the VOIP in the game. It's very cool actually, and automatically talks to your squad, and lowers volume of surrounding sounds. This thread talks about configuration, and the facts about who can talk to who.

I haven't confirmed mine is working yet, but apparently have to press "B" to talk? Wish it was just voice activated...

Lastly, we were struggling on how to CHAT with someone while in-game. Turns out, you just use one of J,K,L to chat with ALL, TEAM, SQUAD. [see options / audio] (I was trying a bunch of obsolete commands inthe command console (~), with no luck.

Having more trouble with in game VOIP. Some saying since patch 1.0.3, but now we're up to 1.1.2 I think (compatible with special forces exp pack). Anyway - Ventrillo is apparently yet another voip client. Have to look into it - not sure if it requires server software support, or P2P like Skype, etc.

How the kit unlocking system works.

Here is a list of the ranks, and points needed to acquire each. (I've got a LOT of work ahead of me)

Server Groups

Global Conflict has organized games modeled around a map of Europe. Will have to look into this.

Live Sig

Check out my BF2tracker sig (is this live? does the global score still say 183?):
Nope - I'm up to 212 now, and no update on the pic -- looks like it's a static snapshot. Bummer.

Update 10/18/05 - well NOW it shows 219, so I guess the data IS live. bf2tracker was down a few times the past couple days, so maybe that was the cause...

...and here's another one, this one from bf2s.com, actually comes in 4 different pieces
(this one is only as up to date as how often I hit the site - he only refreshes stats data when we hit the site)
Name and Online Status
Score, Kills, Deaths, and Time
SPM, KPM, DPM, and K:D Ratio
All Awards (minus stars and purple heart)

And here is yet another sig, from bf2stats.nsvr.info

volleynerd's Signature

Special Forces Expansion Pack

Looks like this is old news (from July), but there's already talk of the expansion pack for BF2. Apparently this one has all special ops dudes. I'll never get good at the original BF2 before it's already time to buy the expansion.

Update 11/09/05 - sure enough, the Special Forces expansion pack is now available for purchase on the EA site. Apparently you can buy, and download the bits now, but can't play until 11/22. Sweet, this will give me something to do instead of Xbox 360 (they come out the same day) -- while I wait for my company to fulfill their promise to buy us each a 360.

Classic chopper pilot story from my buddy Intern Joe"

so funny, i jumped in and instantly, 6 dudes were in there with me and i was the pilot. after a shaky start, someone asks "count, you know how to fly this thing?" i dont know how to answer and landed in the middle of the battlefield, with everyone alive, but it was funny as hell

Google Talk

Of course everybody knows that Google Talk was released yesterday. So far, it's looking pretty THIN on features to me. I still have to try the voice calling PC to PC.

Here is a page from Google about interfacing to Talk from other IM clients! Talk about "open" !!! Unforutnately for now, Trillian Pro is needed to interface, since you need Jabber/XMPP protocol.

Flickr

Well Intern Joe has been getting me fired up on Flickr lately. At first glance, I saw it as just another photo posting site. Still not completely convinced that I'll use the "community" portion of the site, with the tags, and finding others photos, etc.

There are a couple very cool things about it though:
  • Once you add friends, you are notified automagically when they add new photos.
  • Uploading software. Bummer it's an install to your machine, but once you do it, then have shell extension "send toFlickr". Will resize on the way up if desired.
  • Uses EXIF data to show info about each picture. Date/time taken, camera used, etc. (see below for more on that data)
In doing some early experiments, I have started to learn more about the EXIF data that accompanies the JPG pictures. It has info about the camera used to take the photo, along with date/time taken, exposure settings, etc.

2 issues so far:
  1. Apparently when using the Windows XP power toy to resize pictures, you lose the EXIF data ??? I haven't completely confirmed this, but after resizing manually with XP, then uploading, all my pictures had a "date taken" equal to the "date uploaded" - a pretty good clue that the date taken data had been lost. So I tried again, this time using the original pics, and using the Flickr Uploadr tool - this time it looks like the date taken had survived.
  2. It looks like sorting pics in a stream is automatically based on the date taken. Trying to confirm this. Once you've added pics to the stream, then you adjust the date taken, not sure if the pics are then reordered.
Anyway - in searching around for help on date sorting, and EXIF, Flickr help had this article.
Flickr: Forums: FlickrHelp: exif and filename mass-manipulation software [info] Intern Joe can probably use this since he's lost all the EXIF data in all the file moves (burn to CD, move to HD, backup, compress, etc)

Here are plenty of other people wondering the same thing. Random order, or reverse order of pics in a set is lame.

Someday, when I'm ready to make the switch to gmail, here are some quick notes on the transition.

Xbox 360 Pricing Announced

So it turns out they'll have TWO versions of the Xbox 360 at launch.

$299 - "core system"
  • console
  • wired controller
  • detachable faceplate
  • xbox live silver membership (I *think* this upgrades to gold on weekends?)
  • standard AV cables
$399 - "full" ? system (offers backwards compatibility with xbox v1 games)
  • console
  • 20 GB detachable hard drive
  • wireless controller
  • wireless xbox live headset
  • high def AV cables
  • ethernet cable
  • xbox 360 media remote control (limited time - not sure if that means only during launch?)
  • detachable faceplate
  • xbox live silver membership
Prices for accessories are listed too. The 20 GB HD is $100 just by itself, so the full system will be worth the extra cost.
Wireless controller: $50, Headset $20, and what is a "play and charge kit"?

Now the big remaining question: which titles will be available at launch. There have been many rumors and lists, but per this article, none have absolutely committed.

More details here

Team Xbox writeup here

BTW, the headset looks NICE (packaging pic here). Finally it's something that is hopefully comfortable to wear for many, many hours. :)

Firefox DOM Differences

Where have I been? I guess just following the IE non-compliant train...

I came across the first non-conforming piece of DHTML today when trying to update the innerText of an element. As I've been doing for my whole life with IE, I was trying

someElement.innerText = 'whatever';

That doesn't do anything in Firefox. So I tried to narrow it down. When you alert( someElement ), it works, gives you back an HTMLSpanElement, but what to do from there is the trick.

Thanks to Google Groups, some dudes were talking about w3c compliant firstChild DOM property ...

So here's the Firefox (and IE) compatible code:

someElement.firstChild.data = 'whatever';

Here's the formal reference for the Node interface in the object model.

Follow-up note: if the SPAN element starts off empty, the firstChild property will be null.

In other words, an element only has children if there is text (or other elements) below it in the DOM hierarchy.

Quick fix for now, I started the SPAN tag with a space. (IE will ignore a true space, so use   )

If you want to do this the RIGHT way...look for child node, if not there, add it, otherwise, alter the existing node. Like so:
if ( dan.firstChild == null )
{
node = document.createTextNode( 'added it' );
dan.appendChild( node );
}
else
dan.firstChild.data = 'replaced it';
See reference above for info on the createTextNode and createElement methods.

How to write Firefox extensions

(updated 11/09/05)
Finally got my Firefox extension approved!! Unwrap Text

While poking around trying to get the description formatting correct, found these forms at mozillazine.org

(updated 7/30/05)
Someday, I want to write a "URL unwrapper" extension. Looks pretty easy...

(Use CopyPlainText as an example, since it works based on the current selection. Then use SuperDragNGo as another example since it opens another tab.)

MSN Virtual Earth Launches

MSN Virtual Earth is here. Currently in "beta" version, but then again, Google keeps the BETA tag on their stuff for quite a while. (Hell, Google Groups is still in beta and I've been using it for years)

Here is some info about Virtual Earth APIs, creating applications using Virtual Earth.
thoughts on who's already using Virtual Earth for their mapping solutions, etc.

Check out Channel9 video here.

Apparently "Eagle Eye", which will show 45 degree tilt view of map/buildings/etc is due in the Fall release.

Google Maps API

Someday I want to look into the Google maps API - people are starting to come up with some cool ideas on how to use the technology.

Here's one where you can make your own map with various points of interest.
GoogleMania::MapBuilder::Home

Transparencies. Very cool - overlays a transparent satellite image over the top of the map view, or vice versa.

This guy uses the Google Maps APIs to interact with the mapping, and track your walking / running route. Draws it on the google map while you plot, and calculates the total distance.

Google Maps Hybrid View

Things continue to heat up in the mapping world.

Google maps recently added their "hybrid" view, where you get the satellite view, with streets labeled on the photos. MSN Virtual Earth (see other related posts) already has this as their "default" satellite view.

Keyboard Spy: Implementation and Counter Measures

My buddy Mark has told me a bit about hiding programs from detection, etc. He blogged this article that walks you through the entire process, including using Alternative Data Streams (ADS) to stuff your code into an existing EXE. I don't mean to inject the DLL, but physically store your code in another EXE, so you can't see it, even from explorer!

Only bummer - ADS only works in NTFS.

Anyway - here's the article. I'll leave it up to Marchello to implement :)

hymn -- decrypt iTunes and iPod music / unprotect AAC files (m4p --> m4a)

Thanks to the TWIT gang for this link.

Open source tool to decrypt the AAC / .m4p files you get from iTunes.

Since we don't have an iPod to download to directly from iTunes, we have a hellish process to go through.

  • Burn CD from iTunes (which won't work on the desktop PC for some reason [unknown error], so we do this on the laptop)
  • Turn around and rip from the CD to mp3.
  • Finally, use the TDK player software to move the mp3 files to the player.

ugh...

hymn -- decrypt iTunes and iPod music / unprotect AAC files (m4p --> m4a)

Caution (from Leo): When this hymn decrypter is running, it apparently registers as an "authorized" computer for iTunes to let it read / "play" the m4p file. When it's done with whatever music files you asked it to work on, it "unauthorizes" the software. Basically, the software is acting like an authorized computer for the life of the decryption. If you do this all the time, there will be all these auth / unauth calls for your account. Wonder if Apple will start to be suspicious???

Thanks TWIT !!

Customize Firefox Search

Saw this on Attack of the Show the other day.

You can add your own search engines to the search control in Firefox. Here's how:

Some popular engines here, pretty cool, added via a JavaScript call?

Quick summary: you put a .src file in the searchengines Firefox folder, along with optional icon (16x16 GIF or PNG). That's it, you're searching.

AotS notes on this and below is the SRC file for a google site search.

Google Maps with Lat/Long - Direct Link to Map

Great for cheating on geocaching :) you can enter latitude / longitude in google maps. MIN DEC (minute decimal) format seems to be OK with google.

You can literally copy/paste the coordinates into google maps from geocaching.com.

example: N 33° 04.422 W 117° 16.382

(Also helpful, use geocode.com to convert from street address to latitude / longitude coordinates. Then geocaching.com can search nearby that location.)

updated 8/8/05
Here's an example of how to direct URL link into Google Maps. You can see this from the "link to this page" link on the top right.

This is with lat/long coords:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=33.1051+-117.30523

This is with street address:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=6464+pyrus+pl,+92009 (this will use default zoom settings)

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=6464+pyrus+pl,+92009&ll=33.125188,-117.289696&spn=0.094100,0.158512&hl=en
(this will have the exact zoom/location settings you had when you copied the link)

No flicker nav bar in IE

See these all over the place, but here's a reference as to one good way to do it.

Basically two images, one with the whole navbar unselected, then one with it selected. The "hover" state for each block defines a specific section of the background image to use.

Also used here, LI elements with no margin/border/etc.

Probably breaks in Firefox :)

ISO 8895 Character Set

Highly geeky, I realize, but here's a decent quick reference on the ISO character set. Mostly used in XSLT files (and sometimes HTML) where you use the code instead of the character itself.

Most often used are:
&nbsp; (non-breaking space) &#160;
© (copyright) &#169;
... and others ...

First Audioblogger Post

Well this turns out ok...a little garbled, but good enough to remember thoughts from the road...

this is an audio post - click to play

Audioblogger

Wow - this is pretty cool. Was playing around with some updates to my blogger pages, decided to see what's new.

Audioblogging -- the ability to call from a phone, record your thoughts, and their posted to your blog as an MP3 file!! Way cool. Best of all - it's FREE, and hooks into your existing blogger.com blogs.

Blogger.com template bug

When I posted a new topic today on DotNetNerd, I noticed that the text of the first post was starting below the bottom of the archives list, leaving tons of white space at the top of the page.

Not sure when this started, only in the past couple days, but it looks like it's affecting many people.

View source, and you see an empty <div> tag just before the $BlogItemBody$ section (from the template). The style on this DIV is clear:both which means don't allow this text to go alongside any floating elements. Well, the archives list "menu" to the right of the page is exactly that - float: right.

Anyway - here are some links where people suggest workarounds. I briefly tried one of them (put my own DIV surrounding the BlogItemBody), but it didn't work (at least in preview mode). Hopefully Blogger.com will fix this soon...

Surprisingly, this was the first hit on google for "blogger template clear both".

Marchello pointed me to this task manager extension. I haven't tried it, but judging from the screenshots, it's pretty decent.

On TWITcast, Leo and friends talk about Yahoo Unlimited, where supposedly you can get unlimited music downloads for $4.99/mo if you sign up for a year.

-- portable player is not iPod, but rather Creative? (see site for details I guess)

More Podcasting Fun

Just some links and pointers on Podcasting stuff

Podnova top 40 -- podcasts ranked by popularity

So far I'm liking iPodder client the best for Windows. Can manually download any previous posts, as well as setup schedule, etc.

Doppler was another choice, but don't like how you can't easily manually download previous posts.

Some recommendations from the GrokTalks site:
  • DrizzleCast uses MS BITS to download podcasts using available idle bandwidth
  • FeedDemon looks like a really killer news aggregator + podcast (enclosures) scheduled download support, etc. Unfortunately, they want $30 for it. :(

Fun with Dell Laptop Partitioning

Still screwing around with my new Dell Inspiron laptop. Apparently the PC restore functionality is crushed if/when you repartition, reinstall Windows, etc. where it wipes out the master boot record (MBR).

Inside the Dell PC Restore Partition

This guy has a site that has incredible details about the MBR that comes on the system from Dell, and how he hacked around to get it back. A bit too gnarly for me to try...so I guess I'll never have my factory installed OS again... :(

Boot.ini in Windows

I'm screwing around with the partitions on my new Dell Inspiron laptop. Apparently when I reinstalled Windows XP, it nukes the factory master boot record, so you lose ability to use Dell PC restore (where it restores from the hidden partition)

I'm tempted to try to boot into that partition by tweaking boot.ini, but not sure what directory to point it to. ... and worse, screwing up boot.ini bad enough so it won't boot Windows.

Here are some thoughts on boot.ini.

Refresh Meta Tag

I was uploading something to MS yesterday at work, and was looking at their HTML upload progress page.

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="2,progressbar.aspx?ProgressID=85244142">

I didn't know there can be more to the content attribute than just the interval (2 seconds here). It seems that the rest of the data is just the URL.

It's fairly obvious what they're doing, just hitting a URL that will lookup the "progress" for a given ID.

(wonder *how* they find progress -- looking at the uploading file on disk, and seeing how much of the file they have, or the code that's doing the transfering is updating DB or other state somewhere...)

Measuring Element Dimension and Location (Internet Explorer - DHTML)

Once in a great while, when I'm hacking on some DHTML code, I wonder how all the various coordinate values for objects are inter-related. This link below is the MSDN help page that shows the coordinate values in a graphical way.

Example: Show/hide DIV block with absolute positioning, and want it to show up near the user click. You have to take into account if the page is scrolled up a bit.

clientY will tell you where you are in the window, but doesn't account for scrolling.

HINT: use body.scrollTop to add to the clientY where the event was. But only if you have a reference to the BODY element - easiest way is obviously to give BODY an ID.

Awaiting my Adelphia DVR install in January. In the meantime, here's some info about the Motorola box that they're installing.

Apparently it's setup (ethernet, built-in cable modem, USB ports, much of which is currently disabled) to be upgraded in the future to a full-fledged media center on the home network.

Motorola BMC9012 HD DVR

The Moxio UI that runs on the Motorola box comes from a company called Digeo, one of Paul Allen's companies. Supposedly the UI one a technology emmy for user interface. We'll have to see...

A dude posted this FAQ at htdv.forsandieg.com. Fairly comprehensive doc on all things Moxi, Digeo, etc.
